This design was released in December 2018.

    Notes from Nicola:

Mary Clayton’s sweet sampler is a delightful example of a young child’s artwork. Mary tells us that she was aged 9 years when she stitched her sampler. She has given no year or location, however, we believe that the sampler is English and was stitched in the mid 1800’s.

An imposing building first catches the eye. Maybe this was a church run school or orphanage as the roof is topped by a cross. Above hovers two trumpeting angels signifying the word of God and reinforcing our first thought that the building is connected in some way to a church institution. The bottom section of the sampler is full of out of proportion trees, potted roses and a basket of fruit.

The sampler is stitched in cross stitch over two threads. There are a handful of cross stitches that Mary “squeezed” into her sampler that sit one thread wide and two threads high. The sampler is suitable for beginners through to advanced needleworkers. The design area is 201 stitches (w) x 183 stitches (h).

The sampler has been reproduced using the mellowed colors found on the front of the sampler today.

The sampler was charted with Au Ver à Soie® Soie d’Alger silks, although DMC and NPI Silks are provided as optional threads.

The fabric could be something as simple as Antique White or Cream/Ivory or a hand-dyed color that's a lighter shade of tan.

    Soie d’Alger/ DMC/NPI

Mary’s sampler has been reproduced with Au Ver à Soie d’Alger silks and the skein quantities calculated based on 1 strand on 36ct fabric. We have provided conversions for DMC based on 2 strands and Needlepoint Inc. based on 1 strand. The original sampler was stitched on uneven weave measuring approximately 15 x 14 inches. It was very hard to match the linen to a DMC shade number, and although not exact the closest DMC shades were 612/613 .

The sampler has been reproduced using the mellowed colors found on the front of the sampler today.

We are open Tue-Sat 11am-3pm PT for orders, pickup and appointments. We are not able to accept Expedited orders at the present time. Many of our vendors are still taking longer to supply us due to increased demand and supply chain issues. If you only want items we have in stock, please mark your order Ship Partial Cancel Incomplete Items. While we would love to be able to give firm ETAs for items we are out of, that's not possible with the disruption COVID-19 continues to cause across the supply chain.

We hope that everyone stays safe and we truly appreciate your support.

Russian customers: We are unable to accept orders being sent to Russia or using a payment method with that as the country of origin due to sanctions.

EU & UK customers: We are no longer shipping orders less than £135 (~$170USD) to the UK or €150 (~$165USD) to the EU due to VAT requirements imposed by the EU & UK governments. If you are in the EU or UK and you order is over £135/€150, we can send it an you will be responsible for VAT when it is delivered. For orders under that amount, we would suggest having us send it to a Freight Forwarder in the US, which can then handle the requiste paperwork for VAT. We hope the UK & EU governments will adjust the rules to limit its scope to large scale businesses, but we're not confident that will happen.

If you use the Save Cart feature, be sure your cart is empty when you retrieve/view the saved cart. It will over-ride what is in the existing cart.

Please note that we do not charge for orders until we ship them. The checkout process will capture your information for us to use when we ship your order.
