Each year Hands Across the Sea Samplers publishes a sampler which Nicola
considers to be not only beautiful but outstandingly so and worthy to be
crowned Queen of the May. We are pleased to present to you Lucy
Navier 1818 our Queen of the May for the year 2019. A limited edition 60
page booklet in full colour with an extensive stitch guide.

This striking pictorial needlework sampler was stitched in the Regency era, a period in time when romanticism, elegance, high society, art and literature flourished. Executed in a palette of 26 glorious shades of silks on linen ground. The stitches used are cross stitch over 1 and 2 threads, tent stitch, satin stitch, stem stitch, Algerian eyelet, long bullion stitch and French knots. The sampler is suitable for intermediate and advanced needleworkers.

    Stitch count of 463 stitches (w) x 495 stitches (h).

2020 - This booklet is out of print and we have no more and cannot obtain more.

The sampler was charted with Au Ver à Soie® Soie d’Alger silks.

The model was stitched on a 40 count linen. The original sampler was stitched on linen in a colour between DMC shades 677 and 422. We have several options for linen depending on what color and count you want. If you want a solid color, we recommend the 37 count Legacy Linen Corn Tassel.

    LINEN SIZES

The design area is 463 stitches (w) x 495 stitches (h). Our calculations have included a 3” margin for finishing and framing except where noted.

    37ct - Design: 25" x 26.5" Fabric: 31" x 32.5"
      * (cut size SH 36x35 gives you a 3" margin)

    40ct – Design: 23″ x 25″ Fabric: 29″ x 31″
      * (cut size SH 35x26 for hand-dyed linens with a 1.5" margin on one side)

    46ct - Design: 20" x 21.5" Fabric: 26" x 27.5"
This fabric isn't a true even-weave. It sometimes comes to us as 44V/46H and others as 40V/46H. To be safe assume 40 ct on the vertical and 44 on the horizontal. Which means you need a cut of 36x29.5 - 31" x 27" with margins
     * (cut size SH 36x29.5 gives you a 3" margin)

You will find hand-dyed fabric options listed below (click on the name to go the fabric catalog. You could also do it on a cream linen 36 or 40 count you don't want to use a hand-dyed fabric. Fabric photos with a close DMC color are below. You'll find photos of the linens with the Soie d'Alger for project on the Additional Info tab.

Fabric photos with the Soie d'Alger are below.

Skein quantities below are calculated based on 1 strand of Soie d'Alger on 36 ct fabric. The designer has also provided a DMC conversion.

We are open Tue-Sat 11am-3pm PT for orders, pickup and appointments. We are not able to accept Expedited orders at the present time. Many of our vendors are still taking longer to supply us due to increased demand and supply chain issues. If you only want items we have in stock, please mark your order Ship Partial Cancel Incomplete Items. While we would love to be able to give firm ETAs for items we are out of, that's not possible with the disruption COVID-19 continues to cause across the supply chain.

We hope that everyone stays safe and we truly appreciate your support.

Russian customers: We are unable to accept orders being sent to Russia or using a payment method with that as the country of origin due to sanctions.

EU & UK customers: We are no longer shipping orders less than £135 (~$170USD) to the UK or €150 (~$165USD) to the EU due to VAT requirements imposed by the EU & UK governments. If you are in the EU or UK and you order is over £135/€150, we can send it an you will be responsible for VAT when it is delivered. For orders under that amount, we would suggest having us send it to a Freight Forwarder in the US, which can then handle the requiste paperwork for VAT. We hope the UK & EU governments will adjust the rules to limit its scope to large scale businesses, but we're not confident that will happen.
